Gamma Technologies — Universal Clarity for Complex Engineering Software
Gamma Technologies develops advanced multi-physics simulation software used by engineers around the world. To support global adoption, they needed a cohesive icon system and visual language that could make complex functionality intuitive and approachable to users in many regions and disciplines.
Challenge
Gamma’s software is exceptionally powerful — but that power came with UI complexity. The existing iconography and visual systems had grown organically and inconsistently over time. New users faced a steep learning curve, and as the product expanded globally, the lack of a coherent visual language risked slowing adoption and undermining perceived polish.
As Gamma expanded globally, UI inconsistency became not just a usability issue, but a risk to onboarding efficiency, adoption velocity, and brand credibility.
Insight
Engineers may speak different native languages, but they are unified by shared mental models, workflows, and visual expectations. If we could design a consistent, intuitive icon language, supported by a clear brand system, we could reduce cognitive friction and make the product feel more approachable from first use.
Idea / Platform
The idea was to create “Universal Clarity”: a structured icon system and UI vocabulary grounded in recognisable metaphors, visual consistency, and hierarchy. Every icon and visual decision supported a single goal — help engineers quickly understand what’s possible and where to go next. The system was designed not as a one-time design effort, but as a durable visual framework that internal teams could extend without erosion.
Execution
• Audited existing UI elements and categorized functions into logical groups and
hierarchies.
• Designed a 1,000+ icon system covering a broad range of engineering concepts, supported by clear rules for stroke weight, geometry, hierarchy, and metaphor to ensure long-term consistency.
• Extended the visual system to marketing collateral, presentations, and trade-show
graphics to unify the brand across touchpoints.
• Created reference materials and guidelines for internal teams to maintain consistency.
• Established a repeatable design system enabling engineers and designers to extend the icon language without creative drift.
Impact
The icon system improved usability, accelerated onboarding, and reinforced Gamma’s credibility as a polished, enterprise-grade engineering platform.
• A dramatically more cohesive and intuitive UI, reducing visual noise and making the
software more approachable for new users.
• Stronger global brand presence — the same visual language appeared in product,
documentation, and at international trade shows.
• A scalable system that can support future features and modules without visual drift.
